Minutes:
Four subjects on the table:
1) Recruit! Recruit! Recruit! The sooner that we become an official group, the sooner we can take advantage of all the opportunities offered from PSU and the APVMA!!
2) Projects…
Haley offered to get help with building our first website!
Haley also came up the idea to offer dog grooming as a fundraiser (she knows
someone that does grooming professionally that might be willing to help out).
Plan on this being a spring project.
Linda suggested the idea of an intro dog obedience class (knows a professional that might be willing to donate the time). Plans for this unknown at this time.
Lori suggested that we should make arrangements to raise funds for some of the local rescue societies, and will contact them to find out more about what is involved to raise funds for their programs. Time frame unknown at this time.
3) We are planning on raising funds to attend the APVMA National Symposium next year.
4) We will be meeting every Wednesday, the week following exams throughout the school year.
5) More ideas and people willing to help implement them.
Additional topics under consideration:
1) We need to make some structural decisions:
a) Annual voting to determine members for positions of President, Vice
President, and Secretary
Decisions of each delegated position’s responsibilities to come at a later date.
b) Logo,
Club name, and
beginning of this new letter, and need to know if these are satisfactory.
c) Need to stipulate commitment for membership:
1. Attendance to meeting (~ 1 hr a month)
2. Participation in projects and ideas (~ 10 hours a year)
Recruit! Recruit! Recruit!
Remember! The sooner we become an APVMA sister group,
the sooner we can compete for scholarships and Club awards!

News from our second meeting
3/01/2006!
New members: Welcome!!
Mark it on your calendars: Next meeting
scheduled for Friday,
April 07, 2006 at Meetro’s
@ 2:30 PM
Spring term meetings will be held
throughout quarter the week following exams at the same day and time of the
week.
With the entrance of our two new members
we will be an official group by the beginning of spring term!!...Which will
facilitate our membership into the APVMA hopefully within the month!!
Check out the APVMA website to familiarize yourself with some of the
benefits we will gain by becoming a sister group at: www.apvma.us
Minutes:
Four subjects on the table:
6) Haley consented to preside as Vice Present for this school year. Linda Davis consented to preside as Secretary for this school year.
7) Projects…
a) Haley agreed to find out if we can have a link from the PSU student group’s
web page to our own web site, which she and her fiancé have consented to
generate for us!
b) It was agreed that we will hold one (possibly two) fundraisers during spring
term...although it will only be tentative until we have official notification
regarding our PSU group standing.
c) The idea to offer dog grooming as a fundraiser (Haley know someone that
does grooming professionally that might be will to help)…this
might be a good spring project.
d) Linda agreed to check with a good obedience trainer that she knows to see
about the possibility that she might be willing to donate some time for a basic
dog obedience class as a fundraiser.
e) Lori is still working on making arrangements to raise funds for some of the
local rescue societies. She knows of an equine rescue society that goes to the
slaughter houses and saves them., and will be contacting them. Time frame
unknown at this time.
8) Discussed some guidelines for membership participation, responsibility, and privileges. It was agreed that attendance to meetings is important to stay on track with what’s happening, and play an active role through assisting with fundraisers…basically, showing a commitment to the group which equates to approximately 1 hour a month for the meetings, and approximately 10 hours a year volunteering for fundraisers/functions/etc. Policies regarding the lack of participation was also discussed…we are partially raising funds in order to attend the annual National Symposium sponsored by the APVMA in March 2007…only those willing to help with raising the funds can plan on attending.
9) It is important that we are all supportive of each others aspirations to become a veterinarian. So provision throughout the year will be made for all to share their goals and aspirations.
10) Advertising in the Van Guard to raise membership was discussed briefly.
11) Everyone was happy with the group logo and mission statement.
12) Veterinary school admission was briefly discussed. Lori is willing to provide some informational contacts that will provide us with some of the most frequent reasons why students are rejected, as well things that many of the schools are looking for. If anyone else has or finds additional information, it was asked that they be willing to share it with the group.
1) Lori agreed to visit/or contact someone at the AVPMA to find out how we go about receiving their quarterly newsletter.
Additional topics:
From the President:
Now that we are on the eve of becoming an official group with PSU, I would like to take a moment first, to tell all of you that I am very glad to have all of you here, and that I hope that you all are as excited about this new adventure as I am!!
All of us are embarking on this adventure together, and I want to state that this group is as much yours as it is mine…vote, put your ideas out there, let’s step out and do something that PSU has never seen before! We are the FIRST of our kind on this campus, so let’s work together to make this happen!
Under PSU we will be aided by our own advisor, who will help us structure our group to last long after all of us have moved on. We will have privileges and responsibilities in order for us to maintain our standing within the Student Group organization. When our standing has been finalized, we will go over the information at the following meeting, and there will room for discussion and tweaking of details.
Have a wonderful Spring break!

April 07, 2006
News from our third meeting 4/07/2006!
First of all – Welcome, Welcome, Welcome to our new members; Ethan, Danielle, and Angela! By our next meeting on May 5th (yeah - Cinco de Mayo), we will hopefully be able to welcome two additional new members to our group – Kathleen and Sandy.
Lori, Haley and I are so glad to have you aboard on this new venture and are looking forward to working with all of you to make this the best APVMA group ever!
Our next meeting is
scheduled for May 5, 2006.
Minutes:
v This was a very informative meeting and many issues were discussed. We began by welcoming our new members and taking a few minutes to get to know everyone.
v Lori informed the group of our new advisor: Professor Randy Zelick
His contact info is: zelickr@pdx.edu Phone # 503-725-3086 and his office is in science bldg 1, room 332.
v A field trip to tour the Vet school facilities at OSU was discussed and it was decided that the best time to go would be during the break between spring and summer terms. Lori has come up with a tentative date for the trip on Tuesday, June 20th at 11am. Everyone please check your calendars and let Lori or I know if this will work for you.
v This week, Lori and Haley, will be attending orientation and budget meetings and will be getting solid information on the organization of our group. We will become official with the APVMA by fall of this year.
v Haley is working on getting our website up and running and Ethan has graciously offered to lend a hand in this, as well as looking into information on different affiliations that we can take advantage of.
v The issue of fundraising was mentioned and it was decided that we should host a dog wash/grooming event before the end of spring term. Any other suggestions on the subject of fundraising would be greatly appreciated!
v As mentioned formerly, Lori will be attending a budget meeting this week. We will be allotted $400 per year by PSU for our group and Lori will be finding out just how these monies, (as well as money raised in fundraising), needs to be handled. It was decided that top priority is to order banners with our group name and materials that are needed to get the word out that PSU now has a pre-veterinary group. Other suggestions about how to spend the money included a graduation and/or Christmas party and attending the National APVMA symposium next year.
v Per Ethan’s suggestion, Lori will be looking into getting us a storage area for all of our group’s materials.
v Angela brought up a great idea in that we should put together a list of Vet clinics in the area that are willing to give student opportunities to volunteer and get some hands-on experience. Angela and Danielle have offered to contact local area veterinarians and put together a list for us.
v In my opinion, one of the best aspects of this last meeting was getting to meet people that have the same goals that I have and who are willing to share information that will help everyone reach their goal of becoming a veterinarian. A lot of valuable information about what courses to take, what professors are good, and where to focus your studies was brought up in the meeting. Danielle also mentioned a fun fact that I am definitely going to try – use a dremel tool to trim dog toenails because they don’t seem to mind it as much as they do the nail clippers!
#4:
May 05, 2006
Notes from the meeting held on May 5, 2006.
v First of all I would like to extend a big welcome to our newest members! We are very happy to have you onboard and look forward to working with you.
v A bit of sad news, Lori announced that she had to step down as President due to personal reasons. We all owe her a great debt of gratitude for spearheading this group and starting something that will be good for us all. We will miss her and wish her the best.
v Haley has agreed to step up as President.
v Danielle and Angela were so kind as to put together a list of clinics that allow people to volunteer, so anyone who is interested in getting a copy of that list please email me and I will send it to you ASAP!
v Our trip to tour the veterinary facilities at OSU has been scheduled during the summer break on June 20th, which is a Tuesday. Please contact me or Haley as soon as possible if you are planning to attend.
v It was agreed upon to have a good ole’ fashioned dog wash as our first fundraiser. We will also offer services such as nail trims and anal gland expression. We are hoping that one of the animal shelters will allow us to use their facilities (Haley and Danielle are looking into this for us) and we are shooting for a date in early June. It was agreed upon to set a price on the dog wash instead of just taking donations. Ethan also suggested that we do some volunteering at the shelters and get some experience in handling and washing dogs before our fundraiser.
v
Haley suggested that we look into getting a
booth at local pet events like Pets in the
v Lori is still working out the financial side and hopefully we will be able to get the funds soon to have a banner, T-shirts, and buttons made so that we can advertise the group on campus.
v Haley and Ethan are diligently working on our website.
v Ethan suggested that someone look into getting a blurb about our group onto the Pre-vet requirement sheets that are handed out by the councilors.
v The idea of getting a veterinarian to donate some of his or her time to give free mini exams as a fundraiser was brought up.
v We will be re-registering to APVMA as a group in the fall and we will focus on recruiting and getting the word out about our group.
Our next meeting will be held on May 26 @ 3pm in the Smith Center Room
